Prof. Elliot TURIEL

Elliot Turiel is the Jerome A. Hutto Professor of Education at the University of California, Berkeley, He has served as Interim Dean and as Associate Dean for Academic Affairs, and is an affiliated professor in the Department of Psychology. His research focuses on social and moral development, relations of morality and culture, and opposition and resistance to cultural practices perceived as unjust. His investigations into moral judgments have resulted in the formulation of the domain theory of moral and social development.

 He has studied children’s conceptions of equality and inequalities in school settings, as well as how individuals counter inequalities (such as those based on gender) with overt and covert activities aimed at changing practices that favor those in positions of power in the social hierarchy.

He is the author of The Development of Social Knowledge: Morality and Convention  The Culture of Morality: Social Development, Context, and Conflict (both with Cambridge University Press).
